Top Five Stories of Real-Life Environmental Changemakers and Sustainable Development Initiatives in India

India has many individuals contributing to saving the environment and community development. This article gives an account of five such Indians making an impact on the environment, whose recent initiatives have created a visible and lasting effect across the country.


  1. Alok Shukla - The Environmental Protection Movement for Hasdeo's Forest Ecosystem, (Chhattisgarh)

One of the powerful campaigners against forest destruction by coal mining in Hasdeo, Chhattisgarh is Alok Shukla. All was not well with the Hasdeo forest, as it was on the verge of irreversible ecological damage owing to extensive coal mining operations.


However, Shukla's campaign mobilized the people and took legal route to cut short 21 coal mines proposed in order to preserve the more than 445,000 acres of forest land. In 2024, he received the Goldman Environmental Prize for his environmental advocacy.


  1. Vidyut Mohan- Converting Waste from Cultivation into Fuel (Delhi)

Vidyut Mohan, co-founder of Takachar, recognized for pioneering technology that reduces agricultural smoke emissions by up to 98%.

Takachar, co-founded by Vidyut Mohan, was a low-cost innovation of converting agricultural residues into biochar and renewable fuel to manage the economic risks of stubble burning while helping in waste reduction.


Takachar's innovation has already found over 3,000 tones of agricultural waste converted to fuel and has improved air quality while promoting rural sustainability. Mohan was awarded the Earth shot Prize in 2021 in the category of environmental innovation.


  1. Prasiddhi Singh-Young Environmental Leader (Tamil Nadu)

Only seven years old, Prasiddhi Singh had started her first plantation after Cyclone Vardah. She later started the Prasiddhi Forest Foundation, which is involved in leading an environmental education and plantation initiative in Tamil Nadu.


To date, under this young environmentalist's stewardship, more than 13,000 trees have been planted, and she is one of India's youngest environmentalists. She was awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rastriya Bal Puraskar in 2021.


  1. Sally Holkar-Restoring Maheshwari Weaving and Empowering Women Madhya Pradesh

Sally Holkar has initiated in Rehwa Society the revival of the art of Maheshwari handloom weaving and earned sustainable employment for hundreds of rural women.


By conducting cultural preservation with economic empowerment, she has highly contributed to the socio-economic development of the region. She was conferred the Padma Shri in 2025 for her contribution to traditional arts and women's development.


  1. Women-Led Community Sanitation Initiative: Dhanbad (Jharkhand)

In Dhanbad, Avinashi Singh, Puja Ratnakar, and a few local women spearheaded a campaign on sanitation within the city, focusing on tackling the increase in garbage pileup in the town.

Today, many streets of Dhanbad have adopted the community-level promotion of awareness and involvement of youth-led initiatives.


Segregation of waste and promoting hygiene education with the community have been improved for health outcomes and brought civic sense to the people.
