In a dramatic turn of events, Pakistan has resumed military action against India, violating the ceasefire agreement that was announced just hours earlier. This latest development in the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict has sent shockwaves across the region, with multiple border areas now on high alert.
The ceasefire, brokered by US President Donald Trump, was supposed to halt all military action on land, air, and sea between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan's foreign minister Ishaq Dar had both confirmed the agreement earlier in the day, raising hopes for de-escalation in the region.
However, the short-lived peace was shattered when Pakistani forces resumed shelling and launched drone attacks at multiple locations across Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan. India's foreign secretary Vikram Misri has confirmed these violations, stating that the Indian Army will "respond adequately and appropriately" to the situation.
The current tensions trace back to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, prompting India to launch "Operation Sindoor" on May 7. This operation targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, reportedly eliminating around 100 terrorists.
What makes this India-Pakistan confrontation different from previous skirmishes is the unprecedented scale of military engagement. The Indian Air Force struck eight military sites in Pakistan, including radar units and ammunition dumps, while Pakistan attempted to target Punjab airbases and civilian infrastructure.
The human cost has been devastating. In Rajouri, the additional district development commissioner Raj Kumar Thapa lost his life due to Pakistani shelling. Civilians in border areas are experiencing blackouts and being advised to stay indoors as air raid sirens blare across multiple districts.
The global community has taken notice of the deteriorating situation. Chinese foreign minister has reached out to India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, urging both sides to remain calm. The G7 foreign ministers have condemned the Pahalgam attack while calling for "maximum restraint" from both nations.
As drone sightings continue and air defense systems remain on high alert, the India-Pakistan relationship stands at a critical juncture. The coming days will determine whether diplomatic channels can prevail or if the region will witness further escalation.
For now, residents in border areas remain vigilant, military forces stand ready, and the world watches with bated breath as these two nuclear powers navigate through one of their most tense standoffs in recent history.
